Why we built SensorClean
In 2018 I was running a demand study with about 40 flow and tank level datasets, in Excel, like everyone else. Worksheets everywhere, workbooks everywhere, a lot of VBA written in the hope it would help, and I still wasn't confident I was across everything.
The data was there. The answers were in it. But Excel stops at a million rows and SCADA data blows past that easily, so the signals that mattered most stayed buried.
That's the bind the water industry is in. Civil engineers don't generally write code, so we fall back on spreadsheets. Either you keep going and see the tip of the iceberg, you hire data scientists who take time to build domain knowledge, or the data doesn’t get analyzed. All three quietly introduce risk.
I didn't want other water network engineers going through what I went through. So Brian and I built something that doesn’t have that limit.
Dr Gareth Williams, CEO Co-founder
Gareth brings 18 years of civil engineering experience, with a passion for coding to solve real-world engineering challenges.
He holds a PhD in civil engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, where his research analyzed Hunter Water Corporation's historical monitoring data during large-diameter pipe failures. His work identified operational conditions that increase the risk of water supply disruptions.
He has professional engineering experience in both the public and private sectors, in Australia and Canada, and published work with the American Society of Civil Engineers in the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management.
Dr Brian Williams, CTO Co-founder
Brian has a long history of modeling and investigating water and wastewater systems, beginning with a PhD at Melbourne University on mathematical modeling for the management of wastewater systems.
He has published around 40 papers on parameter estimation of rainfall-runoff models, Bayesian network models for water quality decision making, real-time flood forecasting and statistical modeling, and has run around 25 consulting projects for Hunter Water, NSW Office of Water, the World Bank and others.
Brian taught hydrology, fluid mechanics, civil engineering systems and environmental modeling at the University of Newcastle for almost 30 years, wrote a 700-page book on hydrobiological modeling, and has taught R programming to postgraduate students at Umeå University in Sweden.
